3:10p
Feeling somewhat better today. Yesterday I was pathetic and miserable saying "I'm gonna die" every so often. Sad, but true.
Well enough to be heading off to the Dome for the Twins-Cleveland game any minute now (my folks are picking us up). Not well enough to manage much else, alas, but I'm glad to be on the mend and that it was a shortlived cold/whatever.

2:04p capitol huey
So the TiVo recorded A Capitol Fourth and I start fast-forwarding through it to see if there's anything in it this year that I'd care to watch.
I stopped when they introduced Huey Lewis & the News because, um, in my '80s youth I thought they were okay and because I just had to look because it seems SO FREAKING WEIRD to me that they're playing on this special.
Kevin and I note that one woman is way too excited by their appearance. Jumping up and down, etc.
The music starts and the song is "The Heart of Rock and Roll"
Kevin: "Don't they have any newer material?"
Me: (actually laughing out loud) "Somehow I don't think they should introduce new songs at this event."
Kevin: "I guess I'm weird."
And then I just kept imagining what would happen if bands, who haven't had hits in 20 or more years, would bust out the new material when invited to things like this. Sorry, it's still cracking me up. Trust me, if you were here I'd make ya laugh.

1:59p The evil clown is dead
Got word this week that, within 24 hours, Larry Harmon and Jesse Helms both died. I must admit to a little schadenfreude in knowing that the evil clown is gone. But, I'll miss my friend Bozo, from when I was young.

11:25a DAY 10
DAY 10
Wake up: 6:15 AM (the first time due to thunder and scared children); 7:45 AM (second time, to give Kerri a break); 11 AM (after morning nap) Calories: 1,715 Exercise: 30 mins. weights; 30 mins. treadmill (quarters) Bedtime: TBD Days remaining: 20
EDIT: Me: "Hey Kerri, I'm 1/3 of the way there." Kerri: "How does it feel?" Me: "Like I've got 2/3 to go."
Today was a hard workout. One of those days where motivation was troublesome and at each cycle of hard running, I'd say to myself, "Ah, this is the last one, screw it. I'm done." And then when it came to go hard again, I'd rally somehow, suck it up, and just do it. One foot in from of the other. Halfway there. 100 yards left. Just around this corner. "C'mon, you could do this while carrying on a conversation in high-school. Don't be a wuss, Murphy." I try not to remind myself that it was 18+ years ago that I could run a 6(ish)-minute mile.
It's those little victories after mentally berating yourself for being a pansy that make for a satisfying day.

10:51a Fourth of July
We drove over to Brian and Molly's place for a 4th of July barbeque. Travis and Kelli were there with Ian, and Dan and his wife, Katie (?), as well as two friends of Brian and Molly's with their baby, Harper. (At least I think that was the baby's name. I think the woman was Becky but for some reason the guy's name is eluding me.)
Brian grilled up a batch of hamburgers and hotdogs and corn and ribs. We brought alcoholic beverages (although we didn't actually drink any.) I had thought about making cupcakes, but my body was too taxed Thursday night to make food for Friday. Wish I had though.
We found out that apparently street fireworks are illegal in Massachusetts. Bummer. But I personally was delighted by the fireflies that made a brief appearance in Brian's yard. There weren't as many as Mike's place had, and only for about five to ten minutes could we see any close by. I hadn't been expecting that, so it was an awesome surprise.
After the party broke up for the evening, Kelli got me the three paintings I'd purchased from her. So John and I now own the new Skeletor painting, the Baroness, and Cloud Party. :) I purchased them with part of my stimulus cheque.

10:09a My Short Story "The Disciple" Set to Appear in Reprinted Edition of the Dead But Dreaming Anthology
I came across this blog entry by Dave Rust, who's been hosting a midnight "Bedtime Stories" event at Convergence, where he's been playing stories from Escape Pod, PodCastle, and Pseudopod (including my short story "The Skull-Faced Boy"). I can't say I've ever heard of an event like this before -- sort of a "virtual reading," no author required. It's an interesting experiment.
The same blog also contains this behind-the-scenes tidbit about the Golden Compass movie, courtesy of one of the animators who worked on the film: "Now, for those who thought the film ended abruptly or didn't match the book very well, Vin told us that originally the film did include the final three chapters of the book and followed it very closely. The studio made the decision to have the film re-edited by an action movie editor to 'speed it up.' They also cut out the final three chapters because test audiences felt it was 'too downbeat.' 50 minutes were cut out of the film and many scenes got shuffled around creating continuity errors and plot holes that were not in the original picture. The hope of most the people in the production is to see a Director's Cut of the film come out on DVD which restores the original ending and puts things back in their proper order."
Speaking of Pseudopod, my short story "The Disciple," which appeared on the podcast last year, looks set to be reprinted soon. "The Disciple" appeared back in 2002 in a first-rate Lovecraftian anthology titled Dead But Dreaming. This was my first anthology appearance. Unfortunately, Dead But Dreaming fell victim to the infamous "anthology curse" that plagued my early book appearances. For what was supposed to be my first-ever anthology appearance, the publisher paid me for the story (quite well, in fact), but due to a production error they neglected to actually include my story in the book. For Dead But Dreaming, my story made it into the book, but the publisher went out of business the week the book was released and only 75 copies were ever printed. I was offered a chance to buy some of them, but I declined, since I already had other publications and some of the other authors in the book didn't, so I figured I'd be nice and give those other authors first crack at the books, which were quickly snapped up. I've been kicking myself for this ever since, as those rare copies quickly started selling on eBay for upwards of $300. So I guess the moral of the story is: Always buy books with my stories in them. Or something like that. For my next anthology appearance, my story made it into the book and the publisher printed thousands of copies -- but most of those were promptly obliterated in a freak warehouse fire. It was around that time that I started to wonder whether the universe had some objection to me appearing in anthologies. Fortunately, subsequent projects have gone off without a hitch. Anyway, back to Dead But Dreaming. One of the editors states in this forum post, "We hope to release in the next few weeks. Stay tuned for more information."
